The Way Way Off-Broadway Theatre Company will present a radio-show reading of The War of the Worlds, Saturday, July 8, 2018 at the Roswell Museum and Art Center
The War of the Worlds is a famous radio play, based on the novel by H.G. Wells. Howard E. Koch, the co-writer of Casablanca, adapted the script for radio. In 1938, this radio broadcast terrified listeners who were convinced that an actual alien invasion of Earth was taking place as it was being broadcast from New York’s Mecury Theater.
Orson Welles directed and narrated this Halloween episode, over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network Sunday, October 30, 1938. The radio drama detailed a frightening tale of an extraterrestrial takeover and it became famous for allegedly causing mass panic in America. Although the scale of the panic is disputed because the program had few listeners the incident did secure Welles’ fame as a dramatist.
In honor of Roswell’s 71st Anniversary of it’s UFO Festival this production of The War of the Worlds is being done in partnership with the Roswell UFO Festival and the Way Way Off-Broadway Theatre Company.
