Fireworks show set to celebrate Fourth of July

1101 W. FOURTH ST. ROSWELL, NM 88201 TEL: 575-624-6720 www.roswell-nm.gov

Live music will also be featured at annual event Roswell, N.M. — Fireworks will fill the sky above Cielo Grande Recreation Area on the Fourth of July as Roswell celebrates America’s Independence Day with the annual Mike Satterfield Memorial Fireworks Extravaganza sponsored by the City of Roswell and the Roswell Sertoma Club. The Fourth of July event at Cielo Grande (1600 block West College Boulevard) takes place thanks to the work of the Sertoma Club – a local community service organization – and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, Fire Department and Street Department. Roswell Fire Department personnel, who have received special training, will set up and launch the show. The fireworks will begin about 9:15 p.m. (with a music simulcast on 97.1 FM). Several other activities will be taking place at the park leading up to the fireworks. The free extravanganza will begin at 6 p.m. when things get underway with a variety of food vendors, as well as activities for kids. At 7:30 p.m., the pre-fireworks happenings will be highlighted by a concert by Los Lonely Boys, a Chicano rock trio of brothers from San Angelo, Texas. The group’s first single won a Grammy Award in 2005 after reaching No. 11 on Billboard magazine’s Top 40 listing and No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Just north of Cielo Grande at Elks Lodge #969 (1720 N. Montana Ave.), veterans are invited to a free barbecue the lodge will host for them and their families from 4 to 7 p.m. that day. The Mike Satterfield Memorial Fireworks Extravaganza honors the late Sertoma Club member who was among the group that revived Roswell’s Fourth of July fireworks show in 1997 with the Sertoma Club as the main funding supporter. Satterfield was instrumental in securing the firing equipment and enabling the city’s fire department personnel to get trained and licensed in shooting pyrotechnics.

For more information on the Roswell Sertoma Club Michael Satterfield Memorial Fireworks Extravaganza, contact the Roswell Parks and Recreation Department at 624-6719. Sponsors of the event are the Roswell Sertoma Club, Roswell Fire Department, Roswell Parks and Recreation Department, Roswell Police Department, Roswell Streets Department, Roswell Fireworks Committee, Interstate Security, ELKS Lodge #969, Roswell Daily Record and Majestic Communications.
West College Boulevard from Sycamore Avenue to Montana Avenue will be closed during the fireworks show. To avoid parking complications, people are asked to arrive early. It is also recommended spectators bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. For safety reasons, people should not bring their own fireworks, and should not bring pets.
As motorists leave the area following the fireworks show, they are asked to be aware of and adhere to signs and police officers directing traffic as various streets will be closed and detours will be in place to create a traffic flow that will allow people to most efficiently exit the area.
